Why take care of your skin?
With a surface area of nearly 2 m² and weighing 3 kg in adults, the skin is the largest organ in our body, but also the most visible. Its role is essential because the skin is the first protection against the outside world:
- it helps maintain good hydration;
- it is a physical barrier that prevents harmful substances from entering;
- it is a shield against external aggressions and pollution, which cause the formation of free radicals. This mechanism, known as oxidative stress, explains the aging of our bodies, with the more or less rapid degradation of cells and tissues;
- it is the first line of defense against the sun's rays;
- it protects us from microorganisms.
The skin also helps regulate our body temperature so that it remains constant, whether it is very cold or very hot.
It is also an exceptional sensory organ: we can determine the temperature of a surface or liquid, recognize differences in texture through touch, and feel pain.
Visible to everyone, the appearance and condition of our skin strongly affect our relationships with others.
It is therefore very important to take care of your skin to prevent skin aging, keep it healthy, and preserve all its properties throughout life.
What is the skin made of?
Although very thin - less than 1 mm on the body and face, and up to 4 mm on the soles of the feet - it consists of three different layers:
- the epidermis, which gives the skin its natural pigmentation or a tanned complexion after sun exposure;
- the dermis, made up in particular of collagen and hyaluronic acid, gives the skin its elasticity, and the breakdown of these fibers explains the appearance of wrinkles;
- the hypodermis, made up of adipocytes, is the body's energy reserve.
How can you take care of your skin?
For radiant, healthy skin, it is important to provide it with all the nutrients it needs. One way to take a comprehensive approach is to follow an In & Out routine:
- In: with a balanced diet to work from within;
- Out: with the use of creams, serums, or other cosmetics. Often made with vegetable oils rich in fatty acids, they help with both skin hydration and the healing process.
Which foods should you prioritize?
Choosing foods rich in antioxidants will help protect your skin from cellular aging:
- bell peppers, kiwi, and citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges are rich in vitamin C. In addition to being an antioxidant, vitamin C is involved in collagen production;
- animal-derived products such as liver and butter have a high retinol content, also known as vitamin A;
- vitamin E is mainly found in vegetable oils (wheat germ, sunflower, almond, avocado, hazelnut, and rapeseed oils).
To properly prepare your skin for sun exposure or prolong your tan, three nutrients are essential:
- beta-carotene, which is found in carrots;
- copper, found in significant amounts in veal liver, cashews, tea, and dark chocolate;
- tyrosine, an amino acid found mainly in animal-derived products (meat, fish, cheese, and dairy products).
Finally, for radiant skin and a flawless complexion, don't hesitate:
- to consume royal jelly, fish (especially salmon and tuna), pistachios, brewer's yeast, or season your salads with balsamic vinegar, as they are rich in vitamin B6. This vitamin regulates sebum production;
- to eat oysters and meats such as beef or veal, or add pumpkin, poppy, and wheat germ seeds to your dishes for their zinc content. Zinc is a mineral known for its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and healing properties.
- to include yogurt, cheese, and fermented drinks such as kefir or kombucha in your meals: they are very rich in probiotics.
What should an effective dietary supplement for my skin contain?
For a dietary supplement to be effective, it must work comprehensively: deeply hydrate the skin, prevent skin aging and the appearance of wrinkles, and strengthen the skin against oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
In addition to all the vitamins mentioned above, vitamin B8, selenium, and coenzyme Q10, found in the Hydration & Clear Skin program, are also very important for their respective effects on skin cell growth and their antioxidant properties.
