What is cortisol?
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is often called the "stress hormone" because it is released when the brain has to deal with a stressful situation. But in reality, it is primarily an adaptation hormone that helps the body cope with everyday stimuli.
Cortisol is therefore not our enemy; on the contrary, it is indispensable and essential for daily life and the body's adaptation. The problem arises when the body remains too often in "emergency" mode, and this hormone continuously circulates in the blood at a high level.
Symptoms of high cortisol
Here are the most common signs of excess cortisol when it remains elevated over the long term:
Chronic fatigue
You feel tired first thing in the morning or quickly lose energy during the day. Your body stays on alert, which drains your resources and blocks recovery.
Anxiety and irritability
You feel more tense, irritable, or emotional, sometimes for no reason. Stress affects the areas of the brain that manage emotions, amplifying your reactions.
Mental fog
Hard to concentrate or remember: your mind feels foggy. Stress disrupts the areas of the brain related to attention and memory.
Weight gain
You are gaining weight, especially around the belly, despite your efforts. Stress promotes fat storage and increases cravings for sugar or fatty foods.
Sleep disorders
Are you having trouble falling asleep or waking up during the night? Your body stays alert, which disrupts restorative sleep.
Swollen face
The face appears more swollen, especially upon waking. Stress alters the water/salt balance, causing slight water retention.
