Why does my metabolism slow down during menopause?

Estrogens regulate metabolism and fat distribution: before menopause, they naturally promote fat storage on the hips and thighs (known as a gynoid silhouette). When their levels decrease, the basal metabolism slows down, meaning it burns less energy, and body composition changes, favoring fat storage in the abdominal area (known as an android silhouette). With the same dietary intake, these hormonal changes can lead to gradual weight gain. This gain is often moderate (about 2 to 5 kg over several years), but more importantly, fat is redistributed, which explains why waist circumference can increase even when weight remains stable.
