You've probably heard of it. Ashwagandha is everywhere - in stress supplements, sleep formulas, wellness routines. But behind this name are extracts of very different qualities. And between a basic extract and a KSM-66® standardized to 5% withanolides, the effectiveness is not at all the same.
An adaptogenic plant with 3,000 years of use
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. An adaptogenic plant, it helps the body better withstand stress without stimulating or sedating it.
Its main mechanism involves the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis), the cortisol regulation pathway. Under chronic stress, this axis remains stuck in alert mode. Cortisol never really comes back down - constant tension, disrupted sleep, fatigue that never fully goes away. Ashwagandha helps break this cycle by modulating cortisol secretion and promoting nervous relaxation via GABA receptors.
Withanolides: the active compound that makes the difference
Withanolides are the bioactive compounds in ashwagandha. They are responsible for its scientifically documented adaptogenic action. A low-concentration extract will have only a marginal effect, regardless of the dose displayed on the label.
Two essential criteria to check:
- Guaranteed withanolide content: a minimum of 5% is necessary to benefit from the effects documented in studies.
- Source of the extract: extracts made exclusively from the root have a withanolide profile closer to that of the traditional plant.
Ashwagandha KSM-66® meets both criteria: a standardized, patented extract made exclusively from the root, with a guaranteed withanolide content of at least 5%. More than 20 published clinical studies.
Dosage, timing and duration of use
The clinically studied dose for KSM-66® is 250 to 600 mg per day. A randomized, placebo-controlled study of 58 adults (8 weeks, 250 mg/day) showed:
- Decrease in blood cortisol: from 16.3 µg/dL to 13.61 µg/dL
- Significant reduction in perceived stress (PSS scale)
- Improved sleep quality
The first effects appear within 2 to 4 weeks. A 3-month course helps establish the effects over time. Ashwagandha is ideally taken in the late afternoon or evening to support relaxation and falling asleep.
Precautions: not recommended in cases of thyroid disorders, pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when taking medications with a depressant effect on the central nervous system.
How to choose the right supplement
The market is full of extracts of highly variable quality. Points to check:
- Is the extract identified by a patented name (KSM-66®, Sensoril®)?
- Is the withanolide content guaranteed and clearly displayed?
- Is there a synergy with other active ingredients (magnesium, B vitamins)?
- Is the product made in a certified laboratory, with complete traceability?
The Epycure solution
The Cortisol Balance Course is formulated around 250 mg of Ashwagandha KSM-66® - exactly the dose validated in a clinical study. The formula combines:
- Magnesium bisglycinate (56.25 mg) - magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of the nervous system and helps reduce fatigue. The bisglycinate form was chosen for its excellent absorption.
- L-Tryptophan (100 mg) - a natural precursor to serotonin for emotional balance.
- Vitamins B5, B6, B9 and B12 - vitamin B6 supports the regulation of hormonal activity; B9 and B12 contribute to normal psychological functions and help reduce fatigue.
Formulated in-house by the Epycure R&D team and manufactured in France in ISO 22000-certified laboratories, with 72.6% naturally sourced ingredients. To also act on the metabolism often disrupted by cortisol, the Metabolism & Cortisol Duo combines both formulas.
In summary
Ashwagandha is a serious ingredient - provided you choose the right extract, at the right dosage, combined with the right cofactors. No magic, no shortcuts: just a thoughtfully designed formula to help your body regain its natural balance.
