NUTRITION The best fall fruits and vegetables

2min reading time

It’s no secret that eating different varieties of local, seasonal fruits and vegetables is good for our health and that of the planet: they have more flavor, meet our nutritional needs, contain fewer pesticides, and cost less.

Here are our favorite seasonal vegetables for fall:

Squash

Squash is one of the most medicinal foods in our vegetable garden: it is rich in beta-carotene, or provitamin A, and vitamins C and E, which are powerful antioxidants. It also contains lycopene, several B vitamins (B2 and B6 and folic acid), and minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, and zinc. A nutritional powerhouse that contributes to the health of the skin, bones, and teeth, as well as to the balance of the nervous and digestive systems.

They can be used in many culinary preparations: as a cream, soup, broth, or purée, baked, sautéed, gratinated, and even as a base for cakes, tarts, and puddings!

Mushrooms

They are rich in B vitamins and vitamin E. As for minerals, they contain high levels of copper, phosphorus, and iron, which make them extremely beneficial for the heart and strengthen our immune system.

Some can be eaten raw, but most are enhanced by cooking. They should be cleaned and cooked as quickly as possible to make the most of their nutritional properties and also to facilitate their digestion.

Chestnuts

They contain minerals such as manganese, magnesium, and potassium, as well as iron and phosphorus. They are high in carbohydrates but also contain plenty of fiber and have anti-inflammatory properties. They are an excellent prebiotic food that our intestinal bacteria love.

Don’t hesitate any longer to give in to the incomparable aroma of the chestnut stalls that set up in towns everywhere until the end of February :)

You can also eat other vegetables starting in October, such as beetroot, red kuri squash, spinach, eggplant, carrots, broccoli, leeks, cauliflower, or even turnips (cooked or in soup for extra enjoyment).

What fruits are in season in fall?

Pomegranate

They are very rich in antioxidants, making them an excellent food for combating cellular aging, improving cardiovascular health, and promoting skin health.

Their potassium content helps cleanse the kidneys, supporting the body’s natural detoxification process.

Pomegranate also contains pectin, a fermentable soluble fiber that contributes to its purifying effect and helps keep our microbiome in good health. Finally, its high tannin content helps reduce inflammation in the intestinal mucous membranes.

Its seeds can easily brighten up your salads, vegetable stir-fries, or desserts and add a touch of freshness. And finally, a secret: its juice is considered an excellent aphrodisiac ;)

Figs

Figs are rich in antioxidants, minerals, vitamin B, and fiber. They are excellent for digestion!

The season lasts only until November, so don’t miss out! Buy or pick them when they are plump, slightly wrinkled, and soft to the touch, as they do not ripen after picking. A little tip: purple figs are more flavorful than green ones. Add them to your sweet and savory recipes, and enjoy them both raw and cooked.

You can also eat other fruits in fall, such as clementines, apples, plums, or pears.
